Amdy sinks old club

The former Portsmouth player came back to haunt his old club in what was an ugly Saturday contest at Fratton Park with his first goal in English football.

The result ends our winless run on the road at 25 games. Fratton Park was the last away ground we won at back in October…2005! That is one record I`m pleased Pardew`s era has put to bed.

January signing Ben Thatcher received a hot reception from Portsmouth fans for his brutal forearm challenge on Pedro Mendes when Pompey played at Thatcher’s former club Manchester City earlier in the season. But the new left back put in a top performance and had the last laugh with the three points.

The game was pretty even through out with Pompey’s Taylor and Andy Cole always looking dangerous. Charlton could have taken the lead with chances through Marcus Bent, Hughes and Rommedahl.

Scott Carson put in another good performance and Charlton defended a lot better today than in recent matches.

The first half ended goalless and Charlton should feel they had done enough to be leading. Confidence is a wonderful thing and I wish Marcus Bent could find himself some sooner rather than later.

The second half was also tight and Pompey`s Taylor looked to be the home side`s main threat. Charlton stood tall at the back though and Pompey was getting little from the defence.

Jerome Thomas had another good game as he tried to bring the away team forward and carve out a chance. The 5 man midfield was too strong for Pompey to break down and the Addicks was to get their rewards.

It all happened with just over 10 minutes to go, former Pompey favourite Amdy Faye popped up and scored. His first ever goal in English football and I doubt he’ll score one that important for some time to come.

Carson kept Cole out late on and Charlton ended victorious. This could be the turning point and West Ham and Wigan are now within touching distance.
