Addicks Outrage at Preston Pricing

There has been disappointment voiced from both Addicks fans and the Addicks board at the way Preston have priced tickets for away fans for Saturday’s Championship match.

In order to try and boost the attendance and generate a better atmosphere the Lilywhites have cut the price of tickets for the match with the Addicks, which is also being screen on Sky Sports on Saturday evening. Reducing ticket prices is a good thing, however this only applies for home fans! Adults will now have to pay only £10, while the travelling Addicks will have to pay between £21 and £25.

This is not something that has gone unnoticed (obviously) and has caused anger from Addicks fans as Ben Hayes (the elected supporters director) told the Addicks website: “Although Preston are acting within the rules, it seems a bit short sighted not to extend the reduction to Charlton fans as well.

“I understand it’s a special promotion that is supposed to make a better atmosphere at the match, but surely away supporters are vital to creating an atmosphere as well?”

It is not just the fans that have voiced their concerns on this issue, Addicks chief executive Peter Varney has also added his voice to the debate: “I totally understand the emotive reactions of our supporters to this Saturday’s pricing,” Peter Varney added.

“It is extremely disappointing that with the match being televised live with a 5.20pm kick-off and no trains back to London after the match, that Preston have chosen this game to charge our adult fans who buy a ticket on the day two-and-a-half times what they will charge their own supporters.”

This is very disappointing to hear, and although the Lilywhites are not doing anything wrong legally, morally they are.

Since initially writing this it has now been confirmed that the Lilywhites have now agreed to lower prices, making tickets the same price for travelling fans as the prices the home fans have to pay. Peter Varney has told the Addicks website: “Our issue has always been with the league rule that permitted the situation our supporters faced on Saturday to arise.

“I would like to thank Preston, and in particular their chairman Derek Shaw and general manager Ben Rhodes, for taking this action in the interests of both sets of supporters.”

What is the thought among the Addicks followers on this site on this issue, should the Lilywhites have reduce ticket prices for the Addicks fans too or did you agree with their initial decision anyway? Good on them for lowering prices eventually though. Share these feelings below so we can discuss them.

  • Charlton Addickt says:

The Lilywhites have compensation to pay Everton for the new manager they’ve just installed; it looked like the Addicks fans are helping contribute towards paying that! However good on PNE for eventually making prices equal for both sets of fans, it will be beneifical in the long run.
