Addicks Out After E.T

The Addicks crashed out of the Carling Cup at the third round stage to League One Luton this evening, after extra time, despite taking a third minute lead.

Alan Pardew made wholesales changes for the Addicks, who had some good chances, a couple of missed opportunities from Izale McLeod proved costly.

Both sides had chances to win the match before extra time, but when this came about, a brilliant save from the aptly named Dean Brill denied Luke Varney as the break in extra time approached, with that proving the turning point as the Hatters went ahead soon after that and didn’t look back.

The Addicks were off to a perfect start when Dean Sinclair, 3 minutes, opened the scoring, converting from close range after Izale McLeod’s cross.

Steve Robinson, 43 minutes, volleyed home a fine equaliser for the Hatters with half time approaching, how things might have been different if the Addicks could have made it through to half time all square.

The match couldn’t be settled in 90 minutes, so extra time was required, and on the stroke of half time in this extra period Matthew Spring, 105 minutes, headed home to give the Hatters the lead.

The Addicks went searching in vein for an equaliser, and the match was wrapped up after a Madjid Bougherra slip allowed Drew Talbot, 118 minutes, in to secure the upset victory.
