Addicks edged out

This display from the Addicks should have produced a goalless draw, but a long range effort from Frank Lampard was the only difference.

Charlton have improved massively in recent weeks and with a proven goal scorer up front we may well have been out of this mess by now. Marcus Bent was up front on his own and doing a lot of hard work, but a goal never looked likely for him. Fair play to Marcus Bent though he’s effort was second to none.

It was Amady Faye that gave the ball away just outside his own box that proved costly. Frank Lampard hit an ambitious shot which beat Carson at his far post.

Carson was then on call to save a string of shots in the second half, and Hreidarsson had a commanding presence at the back, keeping Chelsea’s top scorer, Drogba in check for the whole game.

Charlton’s two best chances fell to Amady Faye, who hit the target each time. If it wasn’t for Chelsea having the best keeper in the world between the sticks, Faye would have been celebrating a hat-trick of goals thus far this season.

It just wasn’t to be for Charlton but the performance was a big improvement of late. The fans were excellent and for a change we out sang the away end.

With the big players due back this week I feel the relegation battle games with West Ham, Watford, Wigan and Sheffield Utd are all winnable for the addicks.
