The Great Escape is well and truly underway after another big 3 points for the club.

We have now taken 7 points from a possible 9 and that form, if continued, will save the club from relegation.

Newcastle were the better side in the first half and their midfield which was kept in shape by former Addick Scott Parker, proved too strong for the home side to break down.

Charlton and Newcastle were both quiet in front of goal and after 45 minutes it was goalless.

The second half however showed an improved display from the hosts and they attacked with wave after wave of flowing football.

Zheng Zhi was my man of the match and he showed his versatility as not only a quality midfielder, but also as a striker, scoring one and earning a penalty to help secure the win.

The China captain headed in the opener early on in the second half, from 12 yards out off of a rebounded Darren Bent free-kick, which had hit the bar.

With 86 minutes on the clock, Zheng then went on a solo-run into the box and was fouled by Nolberto Solano with the referee in no doubt.

With Darren Bent being substituted three minutes prior to the incident, the penalty was taken and converted coolly by Jerome Thomas.

Carson performed a wonder save from a close range effort by Charles N’Zogbia deep into stoppage time, but remained un-troubled throughout.

The only down point for manager Alan Pardew, were the injuries to Marcus Bent, Alexandre Song and Darren Bent, who all had to be withdrawn from the action.
