Saturdays 1-1 draw has left us with a massive hill to climb and many fans have now accepted relegation looks more than likely.

The Valley was an arena of noise during the build up to the game, with an Abba tribute getting us ready to sing and shout.

The game was intense and you could feel the players nerves as the match swung from end to end.

Charlton started brightly and they forced a number of corners as Sheffield United couldn’t get out of their half. The best chance came with 13 minutes gone. Charlton broke away and with the goal in sight Ambrose sent a brilliant Rommedahl cross wide with his head.

The pressure continued, another corner swung in by Ambrose found Darren Bent in the area, but the striker sent his shot wide of Paddy Kenny’s goal.

Sheffield United’s only real effort of the half fell the way of Keith Gillespie, it took a top save from Scott Carson to keep the score level.

On the hour Charlton took the lead and it was one of the trademark El Karkouri long range efforts. Travelling into the Blades half he kept going until 35 yards out and he hit one of his power shots, the ball took a couple of deflections before beating a stranded Kenny.

The Valley went wild and the fans thought they were onto another three points.

Sadly that wasn’t to be as Neil Warnock’s boys pegged us back. Our goal seemed to change the player`s mood and we became uncomfortable and started to panic. The crowd sensed this and we were all way too quiet.

Stead levelled and it was all down to Ben Thatcher’s mistake. The left back was struggling with a hip injury and with Hermann Hreidarsson waiting to replace him he allowed Stead to get beyond him and shoot across Carson and into the far corner.

This time it was the travelling fans who went wild as the relegation battle took another twist.

Charlton ended the game far stronger but for all their effort and hard work they couldn’t get past Kenny.

A point each has favoured the blades more than us and boy does it look tougher now than ever.

The Valley faithful left stunned in silence and knowing that relegation was nearly confirmed.
