Adam Matthews Becomes The Addicks 15th Signing Of The Summer

Charlton Athletic have finally made the signing of right-back Adam Matthews on another one-year deal.

The Wales international has been training with the club for a few weeks now after being released by Sunderland who missed out on promotion when they lost to Charlton in the League One Play-Off Final at Wembley.

Starting his career at Cardiff City, he has a lot of experience in both the Championship, the Scottish Premiership with Celtic. In his time there, he also made appearances in the Champions League.

His move to Sunderland, however, didn’t get off to the best start due to an injury that kept him from getting back into the first team. Sunderland then loaned him out to Bristol City until their relegation to the Championship where he made 65 appearances in all competitions over the next two seasons.

New signing, Adam Matthews: “I’m excited. It’s been a tough summer for me personally, not knowing what was going to happen, so I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to come and train to the boys. I want to kick on now and, firstly, stay in the division, but the lads have started really well, so hopefully we can keep that going.

“I know Jonny and Tom well from Wales and I played with Beram at Celtic, so it’s been quite an easy transition for me and I’ve been training with the lads for a few weeks now, so I feel I can slot right in.”

Speaking about Charlton’s newest acquisition, Steve Gallen said: “He’s a good right-back who is very attacking and loves getting forward which is something that Lee was keen on in particular.

“He’s completely proved his fitness and that he’s got a good attitude so he fully deserves the offer of a contract and balances out the squad. We wanted two players for every position and now we’ve finally got that.”

Now Charlton’s 15th signing of the summer, it looks like the club might have made their last signing before the January transfer window, but with Steve Gallen and Lee Bowyer in charge, the surprises keep coming, so you never know.
